History and Accomplishments

Organized in 1921 to enhance conservation of the outdoor resources of Pennsylvania and increase the recreation found there. The protection, preservation and conservation of wildlife and other natural resources as well as the improvement of hunting and fishing within Pennsylvania were the goals set forth.

One of the founding clubs of the League was the Homestead Sportsmen's Club. This club also has the distinction of being the first organized sportsmen's club in the United States of America, and is recorded in the Congressional Record as such.

Incorporated as a non-profit organization and charted by the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County.

Members of the Allegheny County Sportsmen's League have been foremost in demanding legislation to combat stream pollution, restore and control strip-mining operations and conserve our natural resources. During the past 87 years the League has exerted a powerful influence to enact landmark  legislation such as....

• 1937 -- Pennsylvania Clean Stream Act
• 1937 -- Act 217 establishing Conservation Districts
• 1945 -- Acid mine drainage declared a pollutant
• 1956 -- Federal Water Pollution Control Act
• 1960 -- Pennsylvania Air Pollution Control Act
• 1963 -- Bituminous Open Pit Mining Act
• 1965 -- Act 194 to the Clean Streams Act
• 1967 -- Project 500 ($500 million bond issue known as the "Land & Water Conservation & Reclamation Fund")
  
• 1967 -- Pennsylvania Mine Subsidence Law
• 1968 -- Solid Waste Management Act
• 1968 -- Amendments to the Air Pollution Control Act of 1960
• 1969 -- Conservation Bill of Rights
• 1970 -- Amendments to the Air Pollution Control Act of 1960
• 1971 -- All Surface mining Act
• 1971 -- Creation of the Department of Environmental Resources
• 1972 -- Regulations to control erosion and sedimentation
• 1973 -- Clean & Green Amendment
• 1974 -- Constitutional Right to Clean Air & Water
• 1979 -- Storm water Management Act
• 1980 -- Clean Air Act Amendments
• 1984 -- Drafted a proposal to standardize the application and issuance of permits for carrying concealed firearms.
  
• 1985 -- Testified at the Game & Fish hearings for the Recodification of the Pennsylvania Game Laws.
  
• 1986 -- Testified in support of legislation exempting existing shooting ranges from noise pollution ordinances.
  
• 1988 -- Worked with NRA in having Senate Bill 245 passed and signed to make the application and issuance of firearm permits standard         throughout Pennsylvania.
  
• 1993 -- Testified against the City of Pittsburgh Ban on So-called "Assault Weapons".
  
• 1994 -- Filed law suit against the City of Pittsburgh of the enactment of a ban on so-called "assault weapons".
  
• 1995 -- Filed Freedom of Information request that uncovered a secret plan by the City of Pittsburgh to establish an illegal computerized gun registration scheme.
  
• 1995 -- Became the plaintiff in a law suit against the City of Pittsburgh to prevent a computerized gun registration project.
• 1995 -- Annual sponsor the Allegheny Sport, Travel & Outdoor Show.
